The Sandwell Young African Caribbean Achievers’ Event has taken place every year
since 1997. The organisation is a not for profit voluntary association who work within
the Borough of Sandwell focusing on raising self esteem amongst children of African
Caribbean origin (including dual heritage) by way of holding an annual event to publicly
recognise young people who have been nominated by their peers for the positive achievements.
It also counteracts the negative publicity associated with gun and knife crime.
They are nominated by schools, colleges, youth groups, places of worship, parents
and carers in a range of areas including academic, performing arts, sports, business
community work and personal achievement. Past winners who have gone on to achieve
at the highest level including one Olympic Gold Medallist and a child who recorded
the highest ever GCSE results in her school.
The 2011 event attracted 250 people with each nominee receiving a medal and the overall
category winners being presented with a trophy.
