Maud Knight

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs Maud Knight . Maud as a longstanding member of the West Bromwich African Caribbean Resource Centre and Club Carib . She volunteered in the day care service and is credited with founding the day care choir. The pictures show her in 2009 performing for the choir as part of Sandwell’s Black History Month. You will be deeply missed by us all . Rest in peace ????????????

We were saddened to announce the death of Mr Clinton Reid who was a long standing member of the centre and chair of the entertainment committee. A quiet man blessed with a quick wit. If you asked him if he was alright he would say I'm half left.

Mr Clarence Cameron

Mr Clarence Cameron one of our founder members and trustees has passed away. He was the chair of Sandwell and District West Indian Community Association and was one of SADWICA’s four representatives to be part of the initial committee of West Bromwich African Caribbean Resource Centre. With us he occupied the role of secretary up until 2022 as well as being a board member of Oscar Sandwell. He cared for his beloved wife Victoria and overcome ill health himself . He loved supporting young people and fostered many young children over a number of years. Due to caring responsibilities and then his own ill health his presence over the last few years was limited . Our sincere condolences go out to the family. May he Rest In Peace ????

Marsel Murray

MR MARSEL MURRAY We are extremely sorry to announce the passing of Mr Marsel Murray after a bout of I’ll health. Marsel worked for 15 years as our meals on wheels driver and delivered over 100,000 meals during that time before leaving to retire in 2011. He was part of the famous 4 domino players who regularly attended the centre. He died surrounded by his family and our thoughts go out to his family at this sad time. May he rest in peace. ????

Mr Richard Towsend

MR RICHARD TOWNSEND was a lovable member of our day service who despite being in his 90's actively attended our day centre until it was forced to close due to lockdown. He became a member of our home care service and our carers often reflected on his warm sense of humour and cheeky smile. He will be sadly missed by the resource centre and at the time of his passing was the eldest active member of our organisation. Heartfelt condolences to his daughter Sharon and rest of his family.

Michael Blackwood aka Farda Blacka

MICHAEL ANTHONY BLACKWOOD "AKA" FARDA BLACKA was one of our resident Saturday night DJ’s and a key driver along with Jah Messiah Esq to establish the centre as a top venue for reggae vinyl revival sessions across the country. He was a keen supporter of the centre following in the footsteps of his father Mike. Always respectful and bringing positive ideas for improvement he was an innovator and motivator. We are thankful for all that he has done to support us and he will be a huge loss.

Victoria Frank

VICTORIA FRANK - Victoria worked alongside 13 others in setting up the resource centre and fulfilled the role of Vice Chair for many years. She also had a short spell as the chair. Mrs Frank was a staunch supporter of the charity and her contribution will never be forgotten. On reflection 50% of the founder members are no longer with us so she can take her place and be proud of her contribution in providing a legacy for African Caribbean people within Sandwell.

BASIL BLACKWOOD We pay homage to another icon of the West Bromwich African Caribbean Resource Centre family . Baz was a regular on a Saturday night with his late wife Lorette . He drank his favourite draft lager when we had it and loved a game of dominoes with de bwoys. Reunited you are now with your loving wife may you Rest in Peace . ????????????

JENNY THOMPSON - Jenny was one of the first of two home care workers when we established our home care service back in 1995. She of course went onwards and upwards to better things but we are proud that the experiences that she gained with us helped her along her career path.

Ellometer Faye Parkes

ELLOMETER "FAYE" PARKES - loved coming to the centre and although like many her age had underlying conditions she actively took part in activities including playing dominoes the exercise classes and enjoyed her specially prepared vegetarian meals, trips to other centres and our Christmas meals. In later years Faye required one to one support and formed a close bond with Sean our day care worker. Joan informed us that when other centres gave up on her we stuck with her to the end. It is heart-warming to know we made a positive difference to her life.

Miriam McKenzie

MIRIAM MCKENZIE - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs Miriam McKenzie. Mrs McKenzie started attending our day service in 2013 and established herself as a firm favourite with her quick wit and jokes on the minibus ride home. She enjoyed going on centre trips to other centres, the theatre and especially enjoyed the seaside trips At Christmas time it was not unusual to hear her say “dis is fa you” as she thrusted a bottle of her home made sorrel into your hands. She liked playing bingo, cards dominoes and the biblical quizzes. She always willing to give things a go and became a member of our day care choir and regularly took part in our gentle exercise classes. A traditional lady of the Caribbean her food likes included sweet potato green banana and yam and she loved knitting and sewing. She was a popular member of our day care family and she will be sadly missed by us all at West Bromwich African Caribbean Resource Centre.

ANDREA RYAN - Andrea was a tireless worker within our home care division playing the dual role of hands on care worker delivering personal care and support to vulnerable people in the local community of Sandwell and Birmingham aswell as senior care supporting care workers with the benefit of her experience. A dedicated caring social care professional who will be sadly missed. She leaves behind children and grandchildren.

VERNAL CAMPBELL - Vernal saw the African Caribbean Centre as somewhere worth fighting for. Vernal attended our day care enjoyed playing dominoes and up to his passing enjoyed our community meals. He was thankful for the services we provided so much he left us a gift in will so we could continue providing health and social care support services to the community.

Daphne Francis

DAPHNE FRANCIS - Daphne attended our day care for many years and loved to engage in all our activities and was a member of our choir. She was very passionate about playing dominoes and would never miss a game. Daphne worked as a professional caterer in a old people's care home and children's home and enjoyed cooking. One of her sayings was "Manners & Respect" will get you far.

Thelma Cohen

THELMA COHEN - Thelma was one of our loyal 'drop in' clients who attended the day care on a regular basis. Thelma was very passionate about the centre and would always be the first to volunteer on behalf of the clients to go to any meetings or gatherings we had involving promoting or sustaining the work we do at the centre. Thelma was a trained nurse and spent over 30 years working for the NHS.

Mr Lloyd Downer

LLOYD DOWNER - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr Lloyd Downer a much loved member of our day service. Despite suffering health problems in later life Mr Downer was a regular attender of our service and participated in activities including the exercise classes and he loved nothing more than playing a competitive game of dominoes against his loving wife Lil and her friend Maisie. He was a well respected member of our group and being a man of god Mr Downer was regularly called upon to say grace before we ate lunch. You will be sadly missed by us all. Our thoughts go out to Lil and the rest of the family.

DAPHNE EDWARDS - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing one of our long-time supporter and volunteer Daphne Edwards. Who passed away on 18th August 2020. Daphne first connected with us when she would visit her mother Pearl Stewart who attended our day service. After Pearl's passing Daphne decided to become a regular volunteer stimulating and supporting the vulnerable older people. Daphne announced the bingo, supported the bible quizzes came on trips and our mini holidays as well as helping with feeding. She maintained high standards throughout the 13 years as a volunteer and will be sadly missed by us all at West Bromwich African Caribbean Resource Centre.

SIMEON ROBERTS - Simeon was a long time member of our day service. Simeon formed a close friendship with Garth Roye (RIP) and they always came to the day centre together . Despite failing health, Simeon always tried his best to take part in activities and was extremely polite and grateful for the support he received.
